School Starts - Comienza el Colegio

Karl happily started his classes on the fifth of September.  Since it is nearby we can walk there.  He wore the shirt he tie-dyed himself at the Oregon Country Fair in July.

Carlos empezo sus clases el cinco de septiembre con gran alegria. Como esta cerca podemos caminar.  Se puso la camiseta que el mismo tiño en la Feria del Campo de Oregon este pasado julio.

He starts the third grade with a very well thought-of teacher, Mrs. Williams.

Comieza el tercer grado con una maestra de muy buena reputation - Sra. Williams.

The bit of news is that at last I found the tile that he painted in kindergarten almost three years ago.  It is of a black dragon with flames for wings.

La otra noticia es que por fin encontré el azulejo que pintó en el jardin de infancia hace casi tres años.  Es de un dragon negro con alas de fuego.

Goodbye to Summer - Adios al Verano

School did not start until two days after Labor Day so I took Karl on a little adventure which took us to the town of Ruston where he had a Root Beer Float.  Then we entered  Point Defiance where Karl played on the beach.

El colegio no empezo hasta dos dias depues del Dia de los Obredos asi que lleve a Carlos a una aventurida que nos llevo al pueblo de Ruston donde Carlos tuvo lo que llaman a root beer float que es un refresco con helado.  Entonces fuimos al parque Point defiance and jugo en la playa.

We then tried to visit Fort Nisqually but it was closed.  This fort was built to protect the white settlers against the indians in 1831.   It was moved to the present location in the 1930s by the WPA

Despues intentamos visitar el el Fuerte de Nisqually pero estaba cerrado.  Este fuerte se construyo en 1831 como centro de mercado y luego para protejer los blancos de los indias durante la guerra de 1855.  En los 1930 fue transladado for la WPA del gobierno federal a su localizacion actuál.

Then we stopped by and visited with my dear friend Maureen who took this picture in her beautiful garden:

From her house, we got on a ferry that took us to Vashon Island and the on the way there we saw a harbor seal swimming.

De su cada cogimos un barco que nos llevo a la isla de Vashon y en camino vimos una foca nadando.

  

From there we stopped by a found my friend Rebecca White at home and we visited while Karl played on her beach with her dog.  After the short visit we drove through the island to catch another ferry to take us to Seattle with the setting sun over the Olympic Mountains.

De ahi nos paramos y encontramos a mi amigo Rebecca en casa.  Mientras visitamos Carlos jugo en la playa on su perro.  Despues de esa corta visita, viajamos atraves de la isla para cojer otro barco que nos llevo a Seattle con la puesta del sol sobre las Sierra Olympica.

Start of Soccer Season - Compieza la Temporada de Futból

Today was the start of the regular fall season for Soccer.  Karl and his team are in the new outside league - LVR - and they are very excited. This team started playing indoor during the raining winter.  The LVR league kicks off the season with a jamboree en which the teams play short half hour games.

Hoy es el compienzo de la temporada del futbol del otoño.  Carlos y su equipo estan en una liga que juaga afuera LVR, y esta muy estusiasmados. Este equipo se organizó en una la liga que jugaba en campos interiores durante nuestro invierno lluvioso.  La liga LVR conmienza la temporara con una franchachela en que los equipos juedan partiditos cortos de mieda hora.

The fireballs played three games. the first one against a team from a mexican community that were older kids and had clearly been playing together for a while.  Karl was in goal and they played to a 2-2 two.  The second game he was also in goal and he stoned the other team so that the Fireballs won 5-0.  The third game, Karl played  striker and had two goals.  That game they won handily 8-nil.  They quickly scored the eight goals and their coach had to tell them not to take any more shots on goal.  A good start to the season

Las Bolas de Fuego juraron tres partidos.  El primero fue contra un equipo de una comunidad mejicana y eran niños majores que habian estaron jugado juntos unas temporadas.  Carlos jugo como portero y ese partido acabo dos a dos.  El segundo partido, Carlos siguio en la porteria y fue una pared y Las Bolas ganaron cinco a nada.  En el tercer partido, Carlos jugo delantero y tuvo dos goles.  Ese partido lo gararon facilmente ocho-nada.  Hicieron todos sus goles tan rapidamente que su entrenador y tecnico les ordenó a no marcar mas goles.  Un buen comienzo a la temporada.

August Tournament

Karl played in a weekend tournament on August 26th  sponsored by a retired Seattle Sounder, James Riley.  It was extremely exciting, with the Karl's Team The Fireballs losing only one game which was to the Black Hawks. The score for that game was 5-3 with Karl scoring all three goals for the fireballs. 

Carlos jugo en un torneo sobre un fin de semano agosto 26 que fue creado por un jugador retidado de nuestro equipo profesional de futból los Seattle Sounders.  Fue emotionante, con el equipo de Carlos, Las Bolas de Fuego solo perdiento un juego al equipo Los Halcones Negros.  El resultado de ese juego fue 5-3 con Carlos marcando los tres goles para Las Bolas de Fuego.

 The two teams met again for the final and they played to a tie of 5 to 5.  The Fireballs were ahead during the first part of the game but toward the end the Hawks went ahead.   Karl's teammate Carson struck the equalizer with only 10 seconds to go.   Karl played goalie for the game including the extra time.

Las Bolas adelante por la primera parte del juego pero hacia el final los Halcones les superaron.  Los dos equipos se encontraron en el final y jugaron a un empate de cinco a cinco.  El companiero de Carlos, Carson logro el empate cuando solo quedaba diez segundos.  Carlos fue el portero durante ese juego incluyendo el tiempo extra.  

Then the game went to the penalty kicks and  Coach Cassidy took Karl out of goal and put Kiernen in (who is taller). The tension was palpable.   Kiernen was a wall did not allow any balls to go pass him.  While for the Fireballs, Sam, Jackson and Carson all scored their penalty kicks.  The referee then ended the game. 

Entonces el partido fue a penaltis y el tecnico Cassidy quito Carlos de la porteria y puso Kiernen (que bastante mas alto).  La tension era evidente.  Kiernen fue una pared y no permitio ni un balon pasarle mientras que Las Bolas se apuntaro goles de Sam, Jackson y Carson.  El arbitro termino el juego entonces.

Oregon Country Fair / Feria del Arte de Oregon

Last week we made our annual trek to Oregon to participate in the arts festival known as the Oregon Country Fair.  Karl's godmother is one of the undermanagers and this is her way of spending time with him and exposing him to more performance and visual arts than he can stand.

La semana pasada hicimos nuestro viaje anual a Oregon para participar en el festival de artes conocido como el Oregon Country Fair.  La madrina de Karl es una de las encargadas y esto es una manera para que el pase un tiempo con ella y a la vez que veo mas artes visuales y actos de que puede soportar.

People dress up in all sorts of costumes. This was one of the most inventive - centaurs and their riders.   Gente se vestia en todo tipo de disfraces. Este fue uno de los mos creativos - centauros y sus jinetes.









There were artsy things for kids to do - Karl made a bracer out of an inner tube and tied a shirt which we had to wait until we got home to wash it to see it in all its glory.

Habia cosas para que los niños crean como este brazacelte que hizo Karl de una llanta interior y tambien tiño una camisa pero tuvimos que esperar a llegar a casa para lavarlo para verlo en toda su gloria.

 There were parades.  Here are a couple of the small ones - the Krishnas and the Black and Whites.  

También hubo desfiles y aqui estan unas de las mas cortas - las de los Krishnas y los de blanco y negro.  

There were lots of performances which included not only music, but also acrobats, vaudeville acts, and jugglers.  One of the our favorites was a group called Nanda.  Below is a vaudelville act that Karl absolutely enjoyed which was reminiscent of Will Rogers complete with whip and lasso.  

Hubo muchos actos que incluian no solo musica, pero tambien acrobatas, vodevil y malabaristas. Unos de nuestros favoritos fue un grupo llamado Nanda.  Aqui esta una actuacíon de vodevil que le gusto much a Karl que recuerda a Will Rogers, completo con latigo y lazo.

We also saw the Fire Circus whose grand finale ended up with dragon puppet aflame.

 Tambien vimos el Circo de Fuego cual gran final termino con una manioneta gigante de un dragon en llamas.







We ended the visit as always with a picture of Ken and Karl in front of the entrance dragon.  Ken may not be able to pick him up for the picture before too long.

Terminamos nuestra visita como siempre con una foto de Ken y Karl delante del dragon en la entrada de la feria.  Ken no podra levantarlo antes de que nos demos cuenta.  

And Summer FINALLY arrives in Seattle /

The Fourth of July has come and gone and our weather has flipped from wet and chilly spring to SUMMER!  We are finally pushing 80 F in Seattle and we will become one of the driest places in the country over the next couple of months. 


El Cuatro de Julio ha venido y ido y nuestro clima ha cambia de un mojado y frio primavera a VERANO!  Por vin estamos casi a 30 C en Seattle y nos convertiremos en unos de los mas sitios secos en el pais por un par de meses. 

Nothing says summer like a backyard baseball.  Ken and Karl ended the day playing a game just between the two of them. 


Nada es mas simbolico de verano que un partido en el jardin de beisbol.  Ken y Karl terminaron el dia jugando a beisbol entre los dos. 

 There was fast balls, there was fielding (watch out for the roses)  


Habia de todo, lanzadas de alta velocidad, cogeduras estupendas (cuidado con las rosas)   

It was silly and fun - a perfect summer day.

Fue ridiculo y divertido - un dia perfecto de verano.

The Fourth of July - El Cuatro de Julio

I started the day by harvesting shelling and sugar snap peas and some baby beets.

Empeze el dia cosechando de nuestra huerta guisantes y remolacha.

Then we went over to my Dad's house cooked up some hamburgers (Karl's request) and the put the baby beets on the grill

Entonces fuimos a la casa de mi padre donde cocinamos unas hamburgesas (los pedio Karl) y pusimos las remolachas sobre la barbacoa.

While my dad took charge of the grill, I made a salad with peas and bean and cooked up the beet greens with garlic, salt and olive oil.  The sugar snaps did not need anything of course

Mientras que mi padre estaba a cargo de la barbacoa, yo hize una ensalada con los guisantes y judias and cocine con ajo, sal y aciete de oliva las hojas de la remolacha.  Los guisante dulces que se comen enteros sin necesitad de nada.

While we cooked, Karl practiced shooting with a slingshot that my Dad bought to keep the deer away from his garden.

Mientras que cocinabamos, Karl practicaba su punteria con una honda que habia comprado mi padre para asustar los ciervos de su jardin.

At last it was time to eat in the wonderful gazebo that my dad built.  This was the beautiful place where we got married twelve years ago. 

Por fin llego la hora de comer enel cenadar que hizo contruir mi padre. Este es el sitio hermoso donde nos casamos haze doce años.

Soccer Tournament /Torneo de Futbol

Karl's team, The Fireballs played in a tournament this weekend, mostly against select teams.  They won the game Friday (without Karl) and tied 0-0 on Saturday.  It was a tough team and boys played good defense.  Karl played midfielders in the first half.


El  equipo de fútbol de Karl, Las Bolas de Fuego, jugaron en un torneo este fin de semana, contra equipos de seleccion.  Ganaron el partido el viernes (sin Karl) y empataron el Sabado.  Era un equipo muy abil y los niños jugaron defensa muy bien.  Karl jugo centrocampista en la primera mitad.

They played on a field quite a bit larger than they were used to.  Karl played goalie in the second half and he made a few saves.  


Jugaron en un campo bastante mas grande de que estaban acostumbraron.   Karl fue el portero para la segunda mitaz y paro un par de balones. 

Sunday they played a much better team, The Rapids which were much better than they so that they lost 5-0.  The Rapids are a select team that has been playing together for at least a year.  But the Fireballs ended the tournament with a win, a tie and a loss.  

El domingo jugaron un equipo de seleccion Los Rápidos, y fueron bastante mejores que ellos y perdieron 5-0.  Los Rápidos son un equipo de selection que has estado jugando y entrenando por lo menos un año.   Aun asi  Las Bolas de Fuego terminando con una ganacia, un empate y una perdida.  

The end of Spring Baseball - El fin de Beisbol Primaveral

Karl had a great time playing baseball this year.  It was the first year he played in kid-pitch and boy did he love pitching.

Carlos se divierto muchisimo jugando al beisból este año.  Es el primer año que juega en que se permite a los niños jugar como lanzador, cosa que le encantó.

On June 10, Karl and most of his team went to Little League Day at Safeco Field to see the Mariners take on the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The Boys had a great time parading around the outfield before the game. 

El 10 de junio, Carlos y su equipo fueron al Campo de Safeco para ver los Marineros contra los Dodgers de Los Angels.  Los niños se lo pasason muy bien desfilando por el borde del campo de deporte.

They had a good time even if they saw the Mariners lose.  As they say, a day in the ballpark is better than a day at the office.

Se lo pasaron bien aunque vieron a los Marineros perder. Como dicen, es mejor un dia en un campo de beisból que un dia en la oficina.

They had a place to pitch with a radar.  Karl threw six pitches, four of were strikes (they hit the center of the dummy catcher's chest protector), with the fastest at 47 mph and slowest at 41 mph.

Tuvieron un sitio para lanzar pelotas con un radar.  Carlos lanzo seis pelotas, cuartro que fueron strikes (exactos for encina del plato) con el mas rapido a case 76 kph y el mas lento a 64 kph - cosa que hay mucho adultos que no pueden lanzar tan rapido.  En la ligas profesionales, los lanzadores pueden lanzar a unos 170 kph.

For the post-season, they won the first game but they lost the second game against the team that ended up wining the championship.

Para el campeonado - ganaron el primer juego pero perdieron el segundo pero fue contra el equipo que fue campeon.  

Here is a successful at bat by Karl in which he made the pitcher throw alot and was able to get a hit and an RBI.

Aqui Carlos bateo bien en que obligó al lanzadar a tirar un monto de pelotas, y pudo pegar la pelota y permitío a su compañero conseguir en punto or "run."  El bateador tiene solo tantas oportunidades para pegar la pelota que tiene ser pegada entre las dos lineas blancas.  Tres "strikes" y se acabo a menos que puede pegar la pelota pero no entre las lineas que entances lo llaman un "foul" y puede intendar lo otra vez que paso aqui.

Then Karl came back to pitch.

Entonces fue el turno de Carlos a lanzar la pelota.  Un lanzador so puede fallar 4 veces que es cuando la pelota no cruza por encima del plato o es demasiado bajo (debajo de las rodillas del bateador) o demasiado alto (for encima de las letras en la camiseta del bateador) Y que el bateador no intente pegarlo.  Si el lanzador falla 4 veces, entonces el bateador coge la primera base so si hubiera pegado la pelota.

Aqui esta la ultima oportunidad a batear de Karl.  Demonstro buena vista y paciencia y el lanzador fallo dando a Karl la primera base or un "walk."

Ending the School Year with a Play

Terminando el Año Escolar con una Obra de Teatro

Karl's class did a play about inventors.  Karl's role was of Ole Christianson who invented his favorite toy, Legos! 

La clase de Karl hiciendo una obra de teatro sobre inventores.  Karl hizo el papel de Ole Christianson que invento su jugete favorito, Legos!.  

Here is the Karl before the play with a classmate - He is almost unrecognizable.  He is wearing my old tie from my parochial school, Santa Marta.

Aqui esta Karl antes de salir al escenario con un compañero de clase.  Es casi irreconocible.  Tiene puesto my vieja corbata de mi uniforme de la colegio de Santa Marta.

I was able to go to both performances.  The one in the afternoon for the school went pretty well.  The performance for the parents in the evening was a study in everything that could go wrong.  One the microphones kept causing feedback, the kids missed their lines, one inventor showed up out of turn and then came back.  The teacher did her best to get the play back on track but it was not possible.  The song at the end involving all the students found them out of the place and the microphone cord getting tangled as the kids tried to get the microphone to correct students.  It was a classic performance.  If I can I will post the video

Pude ir a las dos actuaciones.  El de la tarde para el colegio fue bien.  El de la noche para los padres era un ejemplo que todo que puede ir mal.  Uno de los microfonos fallo haciendo feedack, los niños se olvidaron su lineas, un inventor aparecio fuera de turno y entonces volvio cuando era su turno.  La maestra hizo todo lo que pudo para poder la obra otra vez en su pista, pero no hubo manera.  Los niños estuviero fuera de sitio en la cancion con todos los esturiantes al final.  A consecuencia el cabo del microfono se enredor con los niñs mientas tratanron de llevar el microfono a los cantantes que lo necesitaban.  Era una actuacion de niños clasico.   Si puedo, podre un video de la autuacion.
